JACOB

lectio
From the Book of Genesis (from 32.23 to 32)
32, [23] During that night he (Jacob) rose , took his two wives, two maidservants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of Jabbok. [24] He took them, took them across the stream and also sent over all his possessions. [25] Jacob was left alone and a man wrestled with him until the breaking dawn. [26] Seeing that he could not win it, hit him in the articulation of the femur and the articulation Jacob's dislocated femur, while continuing to fight with him. [27] And he said, "Let me go, for the day dawn." Jacob said: "I will not leave unless you bless me." [28] He asked, "What's your name?". He replied: "Jacob." [29] He said, "You shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed." [30] Then Jacob asked him: "Tell me your name." He replied, 'Why do you ask my name? ". And he blessed him. [31] So Jacob called the place Peniel, "Why - he said - I have seen God face to face, yet my life is preserved." [32] when the sun, when Jacob passed Penuel, limping and hip.

Like Jacob, also in the personal lives of each of us strange things happen. The song, in this month, the sacred author puts forward is very difficult for her genre.
In this chapter of Genesis tells of Jacob's encounter with a character, not well defined, on a night on the river Jabbok. We note in the context
track of night and solitude in which they met. "Jacob was left alone," (v. 25). The
"stand alone" in the night can bring fear, but favors the encounter with God, because the chatter ceases the day and remain in solitude and listen.
The "chatter" is the vain-Loquendo inauthenticity metaphor of human existence that is lost in the anonymity of "is" impersonal.
experience like we have an authoritative character of the Sanhedrin: Nicodemus, the man meets Jesus at night (cf. Jn 3.1 to 21).
At night, the place of silence, it deprives man of the chat room talk, which is the Bible, the true condition of existence as existence in the face of God
the experience of Jacob, God shows the ' ambiguity of the next, provocative and disturbing: "And a man wrestled with him until the breaking of" (v. 25). It is the anonymity of God who comes to meet each one of us through the voice of a teacher, a sage, a friend or a stranger, to recognize and surrender is not surrender to what was until then, but passion and comparing that require commitment and struggle.
Fighting for Jacob becomes his Gethsemane (probably Aramaic gat s mane and = "mill"), in other words, the place where his mill will be broken, broken, ground, living agony, a fight an experience of death.
to believe Jacob is wrestling, where the reasons for yes or no to the clash and where, suddenly, the "yes" is binding on no, internal strength, "Seeing that he could not win it, hit him in the articulation of the femur and the articulation of the femur ... Jacob said: "I will not leave unless you bless me." ... He said, "You shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed." Then Jacob asked him: "Tell me your name." He replied, 'Why do you ask my name? ". And he blessed him "(vv. 26-30).
Hosea, write that on this episode: "As an adult (Jacob) wrestled with God, wrestled with the angel and he won, and wept asked Grace "(Hos 12.4-5).
Here we have an event that appears as a favor to ask, "who in the Book of Wisdom is translated as piety, prayer," gave him the victory in a tough fight because he knew that godliness is more powerful than all "( Wis 10:12).
must be adults, and grow ever stronger in faith to fight, even if in the fight of faith, God is stronger than any resistance and sooner or later he enters our lives in a move unthinkable and unexpected. The prophet Jeremiah
impetuous experience this action of God in his life the same as tripping with which Jacob is won, as a mill that grinds the Peter: "Lord, thou hast deceived me, and I could not resist. You have recourse to force and you got what you wanted "(Jer 20.7).
is the enigma of God that fascinates and escapes human grasp. We can not take ownership, "Let me go, for the day dawn" (v. 27). Jesus says to John the Baptist at the beginning of the proclamation of the Kingdom: "Leave it for now, for us to fulfill all righteousness. So lets do "(Matt. 3:15), and when everything is about to take will say to his disciples," Let. Up to this point "(Lk 22.51).
Returning to our story, it seems at first glance that the man is winning, but there is something more in that fight prayer: Jacob is forced to reveal his name, trust in the hands of the mysterious character (of God), his whole personality.
In Jacob we change the name. The name Jacob means "usurper" of his brother Esau (see January from 25.25 to 26) is now Israel (Yisra'el = "He fights with El"), freely interpreted as "to contend with God:" Why did you fought with God and with men and have prevailed "(v. 29).
In his struggle, his insistence on this, the man does not despair but only gets face to face with God, is measured in his designs, we compare with the promises of God no longer scream, not cry anymore because something new is born in him, something is growing inside of him is the power of the Word effectively penetrating up to their marrow (cf. Heb 4:12). But even if
Jacob asks for the name to the mysterious character, once again God shows unexpectedly, refusing to say the name because it is inaccessible, following in a silent blessing, because in the name of God is blessing: "In every place where I remember my name I want, I'll come to you and bless you "(Exodus 20:24). "His blessing spreads like a river and irrigates the land like a flood" (Sir 39.32).
It is a blessing that dwells in practice and every fragment of human time, because in our struggle praying with God, we are with Him "face to face" (v. 31), as the experience of Moses at Sinai, where God began reveals itself as being: "I am who I am" (Exodus 3:14).
is a direct experience, dynamic because you quit inwardly transformed the experience of Jacob teaches us that this transformation is its elevation to a partner of God, be responsible, without losing the flavor (cf. Mt 5:13), because called flavoring, not only their lives but also those of others who will meet on its path. "And anyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my name's sake, will receive much more "(Matt. 19:29).

question
1. Solitude scares you or is the space where the voices are silent to listen to the chat and meet with God?
2. What fight of faith face every day, to live a new identity for myself, before God?
3. Like Jacob, I can trust my life in God's hands?
4. I am ready to be partners with God, to give flavor to my life to live with responsibility, where he calls me to flavor?

Prayer Lord, you are discreet and quiet that you do not taxable by force, but you hide and wait patiently. Sometimes I seem distant or absent, and the struggle between belief and disbelief. But you O Lord, are stronger than my strengths and weaknesses, and triumphs in my unbelief. It gives flavor to my life because I, with responsibility, to give flavor to those who meet every day in my life, not for me, but for those who have more than I need you.

actio
Repeat often and ponder this word:
"Looking at him you will be beaming, staying with him not be ashamed of your faces" (cf. Ps 34:6).
